Omschrijving This course provides an overview of the ways in which media use has been theorised, introducing students to the various perspectives and terms that have been used to address media use. We provide a historical context and discuss changing practices of media use, addressing digital transformations and their implications for (research on) media use. We discuss the way in which terms such as ‘audience’, ‘media consumer’, ‘media publics’ and ‘media users’ refer to how researchers have understood people’s practices of engagement with media, and how each of these conceptualisations give different perspectives on the question what people do with media.

This course uses a flipped classroom model: every week, a series of knowledge clips is published via Nestor that outline the different theoretical perspectives and existing research on media use, which students can watch at their own pace alongside the weekly readings. During on-campus seminars, we will then discuss and apply the different theories. Students’ awareness and understanding of the different conceptualisations of media use, and their ability to apply this knowledge in case studies, will be tested at the end of the course in an exam.
