Omschrijving | This course familiarizes students with the changing landscape of contemporary journalism around the globe against the backdrop of dramatic economic, technological and cultural developments. It centrally tackles the question of why journalism is changing in the manner that it does and why that which doesn’t change about contemporary journalism remains stable. Addressing these questions, the course draws on a series of case studies which have attracted scholarly attention, such as the partial abandonment of news beats in some newsrooms, the introduction of new technological tools (e.g. fact-checking algorithms, big data, audience metrics) into the business and the craft of journalism, the reorganization of the newsroom and the institution of new editorial policies which attempt to address the challenges of competition and shrinking readership, and the rise of single-subject news blogs and various independent news initiatives outside the ambit of legacy news organizations. The adoption of or hesitation about such developments among news businesses, news producers and news audiences will be critically examined throughout the course, in an attempt to understand why they elicited the responses that they did. Was it because of reasons having to do with how journalists conceive of their craft? Because of social pressures within the newsroom? Because of the decisions of managers? Because of the nature of news businesses? Or because of the preferences of news audiences? Or, perhaps, all or several of the above? It is hoped that by the end of the course students will be able to articulate their views on these questions in an informed manner. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
