Omschrijving What are facts in journalism? Surprisingly, the academic study of journalism has not provided decisive answers to this fundamental question. Although public and academic conversations about the era of post-truth, fake news and alternative facts have intensified in recent years, journalism scholars have questioned the validity of journalistic fact-finding for decades. Whereas in everyday life we determine without difficulty such facts as “it is raining outside” or “there is a table in the room,” many journalism scholars have insisted that such facts are mostly inapplicable to journalism (if they exist at all). What lies at the basis of this counterintuitive position? What kinds of arguments have been adduced to sustain it? The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to the long scholarly debate about the very possibility of journalistic fact-finding. We will do so by engaging in interactive reading of central texts in the study of journalistic fact-finding. In the course of our reading and discussions, we will not regurgitate the ideas presented in the text, but will attempt challenge and reevaluate them in the hope of forming our own independent ideas regarding journalistic fact-finding.
