Omschrijving | Based on the knowledge and skills acquired as part of the practical and theoretical modules, student teams will conduct research into the field of journalistic culture. They will practice setting up a research project, the collection and interpretation of relevant literature and the analysis of historical and current sources. These activities will provide students with a solid foundation for working on their MA thesis. In specific: Foreign corresponding reports on crises events are an everyday feature of news media. From covering global economic meltdowns or global warming and natural disaster to reports on terrorism, war or armed conflict – news programs carry stories on Iraq, Somalia or Chechnya; they report on the bird flue outbreak in Asia, produce stories about rebels in Columbia, government crackdowns in China, floods in Pakistan, the Asian Tsunami or Hurricane Katrina. Alongside foreign corresponding coverage provided by traditional news organizations, countless websites now also provide information from crises regions around the world. Bloggers, citizen journalists, NGO’s, pressure groups and the like have joined the global conversation. They draw attention to and provide information on crises often not covered in the day-to-day programming of traditional news outlets. Throughout the seminar we study these various forms of foreign reporting and crisis coverage. The research seminar takes into consideration traditional foreign corresponding as we find it with mainstream media outlets, as well as information provision of foreign news through alternative outlets. Central questions are: what kinds of foreign reporting does today’s news sphere offer? And how is crisis coverage being transformed in the age of digital media? |
