Omschrijving | This course unit introduces the students to the applicability, constraints and possibilities of social media analytics. The course is firmly grounded in a critical understanding of ‘big data’ and the implications of its use in media industries. The students learn how to collect, analyze and visualize data from social networking sites. The course provides theoretical as well as applied tools to analyze data from social media. It begins with a reflection on the implications and limits of the ‘big data’. It then focuses on three approaches to analyze data from social media, including, text, social network and image analysis. The course is organized as a series of seminars and hands-on methods labs that run twice per week for two hours. After introducing the fundamentals of each approach, the students will be asked to apply these techniques to a sample of data collected from social media. This will give the students hands on experience on the use of these techniques. |
