Omschrijving | Together with Media Theory II: Form and Technology, this course unit provides an in-depth understanding of the different theoretical approaches to media, including how these developed historically and how they relate to one another. In this unit, the focus is on theories of the role and impact of media on society, ranging from initial, linear theories of media effects to more nuanced and constructivist responses. The unit also introduces students to mediatisation as a theoretical concept to understand how media are intrinsically intertwined with social and cultural practices and how they affect social institutions and culture in general. The unit begins with the classic theories of media effects, from the initial hypodermic needle models to theories explaining some aspect of media effects (e.g., agenda setting and framing theory). From there, the focus is on theories that have a more holistic view on media’s impact, such as encoding-decoding, as well as other cultural studies approaches to media’s impact in society. Finally, students will be introduced to theories of mediatisation as a framework to understand and analyse the pivotal function of media in Western societies. Where lectures introduce each theme, weekly seminars are used to discuss the theoretical texts as well as empirical studies into media’s role in different domains of social life. |
