Leerdoelen After completion of the course unit, the student is able:
- to name the full range of filmic techniques present in audiovisual content (from camerawork, to lighting, editing, sound, graphics, mise-en-scene, etc.) based on the assigned literature, lectures and seminars;
- to classify audiovisual content according to formal codes and generic conventions based on the assigned literature, lectures and seminars;
- to describe how formal codes and conventions in audiovisual content are used to create meaning and generate different readings based on the assigned literature, lectures and seminars;
- to critically read and discuss texts on theories and methods of textual analysis;
- to identify the relevant theoretical frameworks and approaches of interpretations of audiovisual forms and content;
- to independently write a theory-driven analysis of different genres of audivisual content.
Omschrijving In this course, students will learn to study audiovisual culture by analyzing the forms, conventions, genres and styles that typify televisual and cinematic content. How is meaning produced through the use of storytelling, mise-en-scene, editing or camerawork? How do we distinguish between ‘popular’ and ‘serious’ television or cinema? How do documentaries try to convince audiences of the ‘truth’ in their depictions?

The course takes the ‘language’ of audiovisual culture as a starting point, i.e. the different techniques that producers of audiovisual content use to create meaning or achieve particular effects. Students will then be familiarized with different modes of analysis and critique that build on this knowledge, including genre analysis, narrative analysis, semiotics and ideological analysis. These modes of analysis are introduced alongside major genres of audiovisual content, such as: documentaries, drama, advertising and news, giving students a broad overview of audiovisual culture and how it is analysed and critiqued. Weekly lectures the main concepts and themes, while seminar hours are used to practice different forms of audiovisual analysis. In this way, students prepare to apply this theoretical and methodological knowledge independently in case studies.
