Omschrijving | This course unit, together with Analysing Media Production and Use, introduces methodologies to empirically study media production and use. In the present course, the focus is on methods of data collection and analysis to examine media texts. The course unit begins with an introduction to the nature and process of academic social research, and the distinct philosophies underpinning quantitative and qualitative research traditions and designs. After these foundations are set, students are introduced to a first, qualitative, methodology to collect and analyse textual data in media: discourse analysis. Next, the course moves on to a second methodology for studying media texts, quantitative content analysis. The course will consist of theory seminars followed by (supervised) practice seminars where students will have a chance to practice the methods with the aim of completing small-scale group research assignments. The practice seminars not only provide an opportunity for students to practice each method, but also provide students with tutoring to assist in completing the assignments. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
