Omschrijving | The course unit Introduction to Media Studies I+ II introduces students to some of the main analytic frameworks that have been developed over the years in the field of media studies. Three pillars of media research – content, production, and audiences – are the focus of most studies within the field. The course unit IMS I + II moves from attention to texts, meanings and content to media and social contexts, to production, and finally, reception. Central is studying why particular ways of thinking developed in particular perspectives and questions. Where Introduction to Media Studies I focused on media content and social contexts, IMS II considers the two other key pillars of media studies, namely production and audiences. Media do not exist in isolation, and content is shaped by producers and interpreted by individuals as they consume it. Attempts to understand the significance of these two poles is at the heart of communication theory as there is widespread recognition that context plays a key role in how media is both produced and consumed. This impacts the broader understandings and uses of media, on societal and individual levels. The first half of IMS II investigates media production, with an emphasis on how we understand the business and regulatory context of media. The second half concentrates on the dominant ways that the process of media consumption has been conceptualized, focusing on the reception of media messages – often as a 'collective' audience – and creation of meaning from media texts. While lectures introduce students to these dominant theoretical approaches, the seminars provide the opportunity for students to delve deeper into theory, by reading key texts and apply the concepts through exercises analysing contemporary examples of media content. The seminars also allow students to apply skills learned in the course Academic Skills to the field of media studies through the writing of a literature review assignment. This course unit picks up on the main debates that students were introduced to in Media Platforms and Industries I + II and Media, Culture and Society and Introduction to Media Studies I, and builds upon these frameworks so that students can understand the different theories that have developed to analyse media content, meanings and social contexts. It also builds upon the skills learned in Academic Skills (e.g. the Literature review draws from skills in synthesizing key ideas from literature and paraphrasing these, as learned in Academic Skills) and allows students to independently conduct literature reviews on key themes in media studies. This course unit is part of the theoretical learning pathway. | ||||||||||||||||||||
