Omschrijving | In this professional skills course, students will gain hands-on writing experience relevant to working in the field of media. They will practice the basic principles of writing in different communication contexts, whether these are commercially-oriented, organizational, creative, journalistic or some combination of each. The overall aim is to learn to write effectively, focusing on achieving particular goals and reaching different target audiences. Students will be introduced to best practices in different media professions and practice writing in various genres, from marketing-related texts and press releases to such journalistic genres as (news) reports, background articles and reviews. To prepare students for writing in professional settings, the course unit is designed to simulate a possible working environment in the field of media. Students will work together on a webzine aimed at international students and expats, with different writing assignments related to the process of creating and publicizing the webzine. By mimicking the process of launching a webzine, students will practice writing in different communication contexts and in different genres. In the last three weeks, students will write content for the webzine, focusing in turn on genres related to reporting, informing and reflection, and finally opinion and lifestyle. In addition to acquiring professional writing skills, students will learn to cooperate and work under the pressure of a deadline, thereby gaining experience with key components of professional media production. |
