Social media are transforming our informal, educational and professional interactions. This course unit will show how data from social media can be used to address central questions in the social sciences, and in turn, how key findings from the social sciences can inform the design and evaluation of social media. Central topics include: How communities are established and sustained; Social network topologies and their effect on collaboration and on the propagation of information; Anonymity, trust and deception; Self-presentation and impression formation; Public vs. private spaces; The emergence of novel linguistic conventions. This course will combine quantitative and qualitative approaches, and will introduce students to language technologies that enable automated analyses of social media communication. |
