Leerdoelen | Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to: 1. Identify key aspects of multilingualism: how it arises, and when and where it is maintained – or not. (1.2) 2. Identify the social background and cognitive makeup of bilinguals, when they use their languages, and how multilinguals are treated in official decisions, including those for education . (1.3) 3. Classify and discuss for an audience the complex language ecology of an individual or set of individuals (2.2) 4. Recognise relevant information when reading technical literature on multilingualism, both in general and applied to specific languages. (3.1) 5. Critically assess, guided by scientific theory, how natural data, extracted from the given database CHILDES can be used to support generalizations. (3.2) 6. Discuss beliefs and attitudes about language and language use, including the ones they hold themselves, and assess the validity of statements about language. (4.1.) 7. Set up, under guidance, effective short-term collaborations with peers in order to produce a unified group product that demonstrates that the group members increased understanding and knowledge by pooling their group resources. (4.2) 8. Demonstrate the ability to process natural data from the given database CHILDES by extracting relevant data. (4.3) |

Omschrijving | This course builds on concepts introduced in the Introduction to Linguistics I and II courses of the former semester. It focuses on what happens to grammars in bilingual contexts, followed by an introduction to multilingualism in the family and school, and multilingualism by people with atypical minds. | ||||||||||||||||||||
