Leerdoelen After finishing this course the student has acquired basic familiarity with important aspects of multilingualism. He/she is ready to continue the study of the topic in the subsequent course – Multilingualism II - which continues exploring the grammatical and cognitive aspects, as well as the reality of multilingualism in the family context and the political planning of multilingualism, especially as it concerns education. At the end of the two modules, the student should have basic knowledge about how multilingualism arises, when and where it is maintained or not, who bilinguals are (in terms of their social backgrounds and cognitive makeup), when and why they use their languages, and how multilinguals are treated in official decisions, including those for education. He/she is equipped with a basic background to read technical literature on these
Omschrijving The consequences of multilingualism for individuals are at the core of this course. Students learn about types of multilingual speakers, structural and functional theories of language acquisition, the cognitive and neurological effects of knowing and using more than one language, the effects of age and personal experience on linguistic abilities, and the effect of multilingualism on intelligence. Students acquire background knowledge and skills that are invaluable for educators, policy makers, language professionals, language scientists, and even forensic investigators.
