This course introduces students of the second year of the Minorities and Multilingualism program to qualitative research methodology. It is the first block of a research methodology course that includes a qualitative and a quantiative component. There will be a lecture and a seminar component. In the lecture, students will learn about key issues in contemporary qualitative research methodologies such as the relationship between qualitative and quantitative research; the place of qualitative research in the larger framework of the scientific process; key techniques (interviewing, participant observation; shadowing; etc.) in qualitative research; designing a qualitative research project; conducting qualitative research; and analyzing the results from qualitative research. In the seminars, students will have the opportunity to apply the concepts learned in lecture. They will be expected to design their own qualitative research project. Students will also have the opportunity, through exercises, group projects, and peer reviewing, to test the skills learned in lecture and through the readings. |
