| Omschrijving | This course unit is the first out of three courses on “Regions” from BA1 to BA3. It lays the groundwork by introducing students to different conceptual understandings of and historiographical approaches to regions. As a first step, it asks what the relevance of space for historians is and then, more specifically, addresses a number of paradigmatic approaches to and concepts of regions used and applied in historical studies. This includes various definitions of regions, the concepts of borders and boundaries, and transnational history and its focus on entanglements and other patterns of exchange. These themes are introduced in a lecture series and further discussed and applied to specific regional examples in the accompanying seminars. | ||||||||||||||||
