Omschrijving Alongside the Renaissance and the Romantic Movement, the Enlightenment is often considered as one of the formative eras in Western thought — and Western life at large, too. It is often associated, for example, with the triumph of reason, the decline of religious superstition, the rise of science, and the flourishing of democracy in the American and French Revolutions. (It has also been associated with the negative elements of such things: particularly the dangers inherent in science and in scientific attitudes.) It is powerfully associated with the French philosophes of the mid-eighteenth century, but in fact intellectuals from the British Isles played a vital role in the Enlightenment, particularly among its mid seventeenth-century origins: Bacon and Newton in science, Hobbes and Locke in politics, and Locke in theories of the human mind. The subject will survey British literature, imaginative and discursive, from this vital and influential era: those it marginalized as well as those it included.
