Leerdoelen
Omschrijving	In the third module of this elective the contemporary problems and developments in Russia and the Balkans and their historical roots form the central theme. The challenges and opportunities in transition from dictatorship to democracy and from conflict to peace are being explored in this seminar, as well as the wider geopolitical context. Bilateral problems between Balkan countries and between Russia and its neighbors are being studied. The phenomenon of the new and assertive Russia (Poetin) in the wider geopolitical context, the external competition for influence in the region and especially the role of energy is also being researched. The internal dimension like the communist inheritance, general historical features and traditions of the regions will form the other central object of study. Transitions and (especially) conflict also disrupts society as a whole: it severely harms the economy and infrastructure, but also leaves traces in political and socio-cultural structures. While ending the armed phase of conflict is a complex endeavor in itself (even through external intervention) it seems even more difficult to transform the roots of war and achieve sustainable peace. Therefore, internal problems like minority issues, human right violations, political or economic instability, reconciliation, corruption and organized crime are also being studied. This course will address a wide range of topics from a western and a regional perspective. Students have to contribute to the seminar with a roleplay and they write a policy-paper on a specific case-study.

Opmerkingen	80% Aanwezigheidsplicht bij werkcolleges. Studenten worden geacht actief te participeren in alle werkcolleges en alle opdrachten buiten de colleges tijdig en correct uit te voeren. Dit vak is onderdeel van een reeks vakken bestaande uit MOES 1a (LEU047P05)/MOES 1b (LEU048P05) + MOES 2 (LEU046B10) + MOES 3 (LEU105B10).
