Leerdoelen |
Students successfully completing this course should be able to gather linguistic data related to power dichotomies and relationships and critically analyze these data. Further, they should be able to communicate these ideas in ways which promote constructive discussion on sensitive topics, rooting their argument in empirical studies and contemporary theory. |
Omschrijving |
This course focuses on various issues of language and power, including the various scales and implications of sociolinguistic hierarchy (i.e., language ideologies and language attitudes), power relationships in discourse, and the linguistic construction of inequality. Examples of a variety of European societies and languages will be discussed in terms of social structure and language use; themes such as standards and dialects, linguistic imperialism, internationalisation, language gender/sexuality and language and ‘race’/ethnicity will also be addressed. |
