Omschrijving (Voortzetting van Eurolab 1a)
This first module of the Eurolab elective track sets out the framework for the track’s interdisciplinary subject- and project-oriented learning environment. The team-taught module consists of a lecture in which basic contents are presented and discussed from different disciplinary angles, and a small-group seminar (lab) in which students engage with themes and texts in more detail. By approaching European core topics from multiple directions, Eurolab both fosters students’ transdisciplinary awareness of different scholarly perspectives and enables them to further develop their own disciplinary skills.
European Migration, this semester’s core topic, is at the heart of past and present political, cultural and linguistic discourses on Europe. Departing from today’s controversies on refugee politics and cultural identities, we will extrapolate and discuss a number of recurrent key questions: What were and are the key motivators for European migration? How can we understand its sociocultural, political as well as its individual dimensions? How is migration politically, socially and culturally processed and reflected? In which regards can contemporary Europe be considered not only as a place of and for migration, but also as its result? By tackling these and other questions at different political, cultural and linguistic levels, students will gain insight into one of the most pressing and complex matters of contemporary Europe.
