Leerdoelen After successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Develop new and innovative research questions about a linguistic theme related to English linguistics, gather and collect relevant information from a variety of linguistics sources, interpret and analyze this information, and summarize and synthesize their findings in an analytic way with a sufficient level of specificity and detail.
2. Critically approach, read, and synthesize sources about a given topic and do so with respect for deadlines, showing an ability to work and write under pressure using appropriate IT-skills.
3. Both orally and in written form express the research findings clearly and accurately in academic English, evidenced both from the final 7000-word thesis and a final thesis presentation in class, as well as interact with the instructor and other students in a cooperative and constructive manner during class sessions.
Omschrijving Students undertake (semi-)independent research in preparation for a BA thesis in English linguistics. During the first half of the semester, students develop and start executing their research project. They are aided in the process through mandatory weekly thesis workshops lasting 3 hours each. As part of the workshops, we detail constructs and processes relevant to the students’ projects, i.e. we will look at issues in theoretical and empirical research, qualitative and quantitative methods, statistics, practical research skills, etc. The course instructors take turns in teaching these workshops (see week-by-week outline below). During the second half of the semester, the focus is on analyzing the results and writing the actual BA thesis, which reports on the student’s research project. This is done under the supervision and mentoring of one of the two instructors. Based on research topics and the instructors’ expertise, students are assigned to one of the two supervisors. The weekly thesis workshops are then replaced by weekly one-on-one individual consultations. For the thesis workshops, attendance is mandatory; individual consultation it not mandatory, but you are strongly encouraged to come to these weekly meetings to discuss your thesis progress.
