Leerdoelen Students will have sufficient knowledge and understanding of various literary traditions and their development in Medieval England in order to 1) contextualise the texts under investigation 2) evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources critically and systematically. They will also be able to conduct research on a topic related to the religious context.
Omschrijving Religion played a very important part in the life-experience of medieval people, and works dealing with the (related) topics of sin and sanctity comprise one of the most fascinating and rich categories of surviving medieval texts. This course will look at English texts of the Middle Ages in order to discover more about notions of sanctity and sinfulness, and to witness examples of holy and unholy behaviour. Such texts provide the reader with some of the earliest windows on the experiences of real individuals, and in the Book of Margery Kempe we encounter the earliest specimen of (women?s) autobiographical writing.
