To better understand Shakespeare's view(s) of human existence within and outside history. To better comprehend Shakespeare's dependence upon and freedom from literary convention.
Omschrijving	Not the least of Shakespeare's claims to dramatic pre-eminence is that he excelled in all of the great genres of the form: tragedy, comedy, and history. In this subject we shall closely study one example of each from his work (titles to be announced) to refresh our understanding of his contribution to world literature.

Opmerkingen	With regard to the literature: good quality edition of Shakespeare's works will be an adequate text; or individual plays from, say, Penguin or World's classics. Note: Henry the FOURTH part one, not Henry the SIXTH. In 2020-2021 this course is on offer in semester II a only.
