Byron’s Don Juan: Form, Narrative, Philosophy |
Leerdoelen |
To gain an understanding of the epic form in the Romantic era. To recognise Byron's unique employment of form and narrative in his greatest work. To piece together, so far as is possible, the 'philosophy' or world-view underpinning the poem, whether stoical, materialist, or relativist. To understand Byron's use of humour, sexuality, and politics in his time. |
Omschrijving |
In Masters tutorial format this subject will read and discuss the greatest long poem in English between Paradise Lost (1664) and The Prelude (1850) -- and the funniest long poem in any language. As its title suggests, the tutorial will occupy itself with the poem's form (the ottava rima, epic vs verse novel), its narrative (a young man on his travels across European cultures, Mediterranean and northern), and, more elusively, its philosophy of existence -- which no poem of this length can live without. |
