Leerdoelen After successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cultural context in which literary texts were composed;
- Work with unfamiliar material;

- Express themselves in a clear, well-structured manner incorporating the opinions or research of others;

- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of English literary texts from different literary periods;
- Work with various types of English discourse (books, electronic media, lectures, films, etc.), even when they are not clearly structured and when the relationships between ideas are only implied rather than stated explicitly;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the interaction between cultural, economic or technological factors and literature in English;
- Express themselves in clear, well-structured `English at level C2.
Omschrijving This course unit will explore the dialectical relationship between fictional versions of London and the physical urban environment over the course of the Twentieth Century. Through a close reading of certain landmark literary texts, students map the ways in which writers have engaged with phenomena such as imperialism, modernism, war, socialism, multiculturalism and neo-liberalism, and how such writing has, in turn, transformed the city that inspired it.
