Leerdoelen Students will develop:
1. their theoretical knowledge of research on instructive texts.
2. their ability to evaluate instructive texts to identify, analyse and test complex questions in document design.
3. their understanding of the structure and coherence of CIS research and its practical application in document design.
4. their competence to identify, analyse and improve complex issues in document design based on relevant models of production and interpretation in a context of use.
5. their ability to accurately and reliably communicate about and use relevant research in the field of document design.
Omschrijving In the Design and Evaluation course students are introduced to a method to analyse, evaluate and optimise the design of instructive texts. Based on the course readings on document design and an initial analysis of a particular instruction, students will implement reusable objective methods for the analysis and evaluation of multimodal instructions.

Students first formulate expectations about problems users may encounter when processing a particular instruction. With these expectations as a starting point, a redesign of the instruction is prepared. Subsequently, students develop and implement a method to comparatively analyse and test the effectiveness of the instruction and its redesign. The method will consist of two phases in which:
(1) a desk analysis is carried out to comparatively describe and analyse the instructions (diagnosis),
(2) a user study to compare the quality of the original and redesigned instruction is set up, tested, improved and conducted (evaluation).
Methods employed in the user study include: Think Aloud Protocol (TAP), questionnaires and interviews, where TAP and questionnaire results are processed quantitatively, while the interview results are used to add qualitative insights.

Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to (where the numbers in brackets refer to the Dublin descriptors cited in the Learning Outcomes of the Bachelor Programme Communication and Information Studies):
1. relate important questions about document design especially the design of instructive texts to central questions, theories and concepts in CIS research (1.1);
2. describe and analyse instructive texts employing theoretical models on document design (2.2);
3. evaluate instructive texts in a context of use through an iteratively designed evaluation method (2.1);
4. redesign instructive texts in line with the outcomes of researched issues in document design (3.2);
5. present coherent oral and written research reports according to academic guidelines (4.1).
