Omschrijving | Drawing from scholarship in philosophy, anthropology, classics, history, and cognitive psychology, this course is a deep dive into both speech acts and the rituals and rhetoric in which those acts are embedded. Beginning with Merlin Donald's Origins of the Modern Mind and using case studies drawn from the history of Early Modern mathematics, the history and philosophy of art, Greco-Roman magic, and ethnographic studies of Papuan tribal groups (among others), we will develop a richly interdisciplinary picture of human speech and its relationship(s) with symbolic, material, and theoretical culture. This course will conclude with a student-led creative project related to the course readings and content. |
