Leerdoelen  In general: Introduction in algorithms, modelling and programming. More specific: By the end of the course, students are able to: 1. Know and apply elementary programming structures, like variables, repetition, choice, recursion, function calls 2. Interpret and discuss elementary Matlab code fragments 3. Solve elementary programs by creating the corresponding algorithms in Matlab 4. Cooperate (in groups of two) in creating Matlab code 

Omschrijving  The course starts with a general introduction in computers and programming. Then basic programming concepts, data structures and methods on data will be introduced. Matlab will be used as programming language. We discuss scripts, arrays, buildin functions, data sets, vectors, code blocks, functions, character strings, cell arrays and of course the general programming concepts like conditional statements, iteration, recursion and such. These programming concepts will be illustrated by engineering examples like spacecraft launch, encryption, spreadsheet data, visualisation of geographical data, edge detection and manipulation of sound.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course unit assumes no prior knowledge.  
Opmerkingen  The practical exam consists of weekly computer exercises. The final exam is a digital multiple choice exam. The final grading will be computed by weighting the grade for the computer exercises (50%) and the digital examination (50%). NOTE: you need to have at least a 5 for both the exam and the weighted computer exercise grading. A 4.5 for your exam can not be compensated with a 8.4 for the computer exercises. You need to do a reexam in this case. Both lab sessions and exam should be at least 5. Final grading is equally weighted total of both results.
