Omschrijving A central concept in the beta-sciences is the relevance of scales. Timescales, scales of energy, and scales of size are crucial to understand when dealing with elementary particles, the function and structure of proteins, functional nano-materials or the driving forces behind evolution. In this course we will explore the physical world from small to large to life, thereby covering an enormous range of scales in size, energy and time.
We will start with an overview of these different scales, and explore key examples. Following this overview, we will encounter the quantum world of elementary particles and the four fundamental forces between them. How well do we understand Nature on such short length scales? What are the time and energy scales that govern this world? Then we move up from the elementary particles to the atoms and molecules, and discover how the careful study of these composite particles can be connected to the spectacular evolution of the universe since the Big Bang.
In the second part of this course we will enter a discovery journey through the molecular world at nanoscale dimensions. It starts with the structure of molecules and ‘en route’ one experiences the design and building of a new molecule and the way molecules interact and communicate with each other. We will try to understand how assemblies of tiny atoms result in a fascinating diversity of functions, ranging from a living cell to a computer chip. During our journey, the concepts of chemistry will be illustrated with molecules and materials that dramatically changed our daily life, such as antibiotics and display materials. It will end with a glimpse in the futuristic world of nanorobots.
In the third part we will focus on the meaning of heritability and genes but also on the carrier of inheritable information, DNA, and its structure. Additionally, the mechanism behind the translation of information on the DNA will be briefly discussed. Finally, it will be explained how DNA may be used in the identification of individuals and how genes are involved in diseases.
Mendels laws of inheritance form the basis of the classic genetics. Heritability of traits is also an essential part of Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Around 1920, population genetics and evolutionary theory were integrated in what is now known as Neo-Darwinism. In modern evolutionary biology, we use Neo-Darwinism to explain how organisms can adapt to their environments (micro-evolution) and how new species originate (macro-evolution). In this series, we will also address the evolution of life history strategies, of sex and of humans.
