Leerdoelen 1) Obtain an overview of the realms of physics, chemistry and biology.
2) Understand the relationship of these disciplines to each other by indicating their relative place in scales of energy, size and time.
3) Report on a current scientific debate in natural sciences while clearly separating facts and opinions.
Omschrijving A central concept in the beta-sciences is the relevance of scales. Timescales, scales of energy, and scales of size are crucial to understand when dealing with elementary particles, the function and structure of proteins, functional nano-materials or the driving forces behind evolution. In this course we will explore the physical world from small to large to life, thereby covering an enormous range of scales in size, energy and time.
We will start with an overview of these different scales, and explore key examples. Following this overview, we will encounter the world of elementary particles and the four fundamental forces between them (physics). How well do we understand Nature on such short length scales? What are the time and energy scales that govern this world? Then we move up from the elementary particles to the quantum regime of atoms and molecules, and discover how the careful study of these composite particles can be connected to the spectacular evolution of the universe since the Big Bang.
In the next part (chemistry) we will explore (sustainable) energy and how it could be stored. During this journey, the concepts of different battery types and its their future will be illustrated and discussed.
In the last part we will focus on the meaning of heritability and genes but also on the carrier of inheritable information, DNA, and its structure (biology and pharmacy). Additionally, the mechanism behind the translation of information on the DNA will be briefly discussed. Finally, it will be explained how we can manipulate DNA, edit the genome and how gene therapies can cure diseases. In this last part, we will also address how genes can influence behavior (the nature vs nuture debate).
