Leerdoelen | Knowledge of debates in the philosophy of art; ability to form, present and debate your own view. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Omschrijving | This course introduces students to central topics in philosophical aesthetics (a.k.a. the philosophy of art), including the definition of art, the value of art, the objectivity of aesthetic judgement, the psychology of art appreciation, the interaction between art and ethics and the paradox of tragedy. Meetings focus on pre-read articles. Students practice with formulating their own views in discussion and writing. Many different things are considered works of art: from Rembrandt’s Nightwatch to Duchamp’s urinal and performances by Marina Abramovic. Do they have anything in common that explains why all of them are art? And if they qualify as art, are they equally valuable? Can we sensibly say that some art is objectively better than other art? Does it matter to an artwork’s artistic merit if the work displays morally repugnant attitudes? This module ranges from fundamental questions about the nature and value of art to the psychology of art appreciation and the importance of natural beauty. Although examples will be used, the course is not aimed at detailed study of specific artworks, but at philosophical questions about art in general. The course is examined on the basis of an essay. Students must also hand in an essay proposal. The requirements for the essay and proposal are specified below.
