Leerdoelen | The main aim of this course is for students to gain an understanding of causes and experiences of 'difference' in the urban context by doing exploratory research in the city of Groningen . This experience (planning, carrying out and evaluating the research) will be applied during the summer school in Vancouver. | ||||||||
Omschrijving | This course addresses structural and experiential dimensions of diversity and inclusion in the urban context. Using some guiding literature, our main focus throughout this course will be to explore and gain an understanding of the different dimensions of the theme through our own research projects. The course will start with a discussion based on readings that address the concepts ‘place’, ‘marginalisation’ and the inclusive city. In groups, we will develop conceptual models that address diversity and inclusion for different population groups. This provides an important theoretical grounding for the empirical research that follows. Next, we will introduce students to how to do research in social geography, including a basic interview training. Students will work in (interdisciplinary) project groups on the question ‘what structures (policy, social/ built environment) help explain in- and exclusion for marginalized groups in Groningen?’. This will entail both desktop research and observations in the field. A second part of the research project addresses how people from different marginalized groups experience in- and exclusion. For this part, students will conduct interviews, work on a mapping exercise and collect visual data. Much of the project will be planned and carried out by students. The meetings with all groups together are organized to discuss progress of the project groups. Finally, students will consider how knowledge based on research like ours could or should be shared with different audiences, and create a ‘public product’ based on their own projects. Throughout the course, the students will be asked to reflect on their learning and experiences. |
