Omschrijving | In this course, we investigate how wars were remembered and commemorated in ancient Rome – and why this matters for understanding the present as much as the past. In ancient Rome, the memory of victories and defeats, of foreign conquests and civil wars was preserved and passed on in a variety of media. Specifically, we examine Roman monuments (like arches or trophies), rituals (triumphal processions or days of mourning), and texts (like Vergil’s Aeneid). How did the Romans commemorate their wars? And what does this tell us about the kind of society that ancient Rome was, its basic values and its anxieties? Our investigation of the past also serves as an invitation to take a fresh look at the present. Studying the commemorative practices of a society both similar and radically different from our own challenges us to reconsider our own societies’ rituals and practices in new ways. What wars do we celebrate, which do we regret? Which aspects of them do we remember, what do we want to forget? And what does this say about our own values, commitments, and ambitions? This course offers an exciting window into an ancient civilization and the opportunity to discuss some difficult questions at the heart of modern civil societies. |
