Omschrijving | It is impossible these days to read any newspaper without coming across the word “populism” or the characterisation “populist”. But what, precisely, are we talking about? Is “it” always a problem for liberal democracy, or actually a useful or even critical litmus test for its current functioning? What are (seen as) causes and consequences of this phenomenon, and how these are related? And, to the extent that certain causes or consequences of “populism” are indeed problematic or worthy of more specific attention, who is/are (a) current leader(s) (such as journalists, politicians and activists) who are making a positive contribution to address them in an effort to return or move to a better functioning liberal democracy? What could or should future leaders themselves focus on? Before the masterclass: Students will read assigned literature. They will also receive instructions individually or in groups to study certain aspects of the assigned literature in more depth based on individual research. They should prepare to actively discuss this aspect during the class in a way that links to the literature that everyone has read and that they view as most appropriate for a fruitful exchange with others. After the masterclass: students will express their views on “populism”, and what others or they themselves could or should do to engage with aspects of its causes or consequences, in a short newspaper like opinion piece (op-ed) (no more than 700 words). |
