Leerdoelen The objective of this course is to initiate an interdisciplinary debate among students on the increasing use of biotechnological means to improve mental health and cognitive abilities.
Omschrijving In advanced market societies, the number of people with psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, ADHD or autism has soared since the last twenty years and the consumption of psychotropic drugs has risen to unprecedented levels. In addition, people are increasingly using other technological means to improve their well-being and cognitive abilities ranging from transcranial magnetic stimulation to vagus nerve therapy, acupuncture or light therapy. Consequently, the fine line between treatment and enhancement is now blurred. How to explain and how to judge these developments? Are psychiatric disorders age-old biological diseases that can finally be diagnosed and treated properly? Did pharmaceutical companies market diseases along with their medicines? Or are people in affluent societies focusing too much on their little pains? In this course we study explanations for the increasing biologisation of individuality as well as its social consequences. What are the social, ethical and legal ramifications of these developments? Are we all becoming ‘unnatural’ cyborgs? And if someone commits a crime was it ‘(s)he’ who did it or the technical device that changed his or her ‘self’?
