Social Aspects of Sustainablity (Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences) |
Leerdoelen |
After this course students will be able to identify and critically reflect on human aspects of environmental problems. Students will be equipped with theory and methods that help develop effective interventions to promote environmentally-friendly behaviour. |
Omschrijving |
Environmental problems such as climate change are among the most urgent challenges of current society. Climate change has detrimental consequences, such as natural hazards and food and water scarcity, which will become more severe in the future. Changes in human behaviour are necessary to prevent future risks and to cope with the existing risks. In this course, you will identify and critically reflect on the human aspects of environmental problems. First, which human behaviours and to what extent cause environmental problems? These behaviours vary greatly, from choosing food products in a supermarket or choosing an energy provider to voting behaviour and policy acceptance. You will think critically about which changes in which behaviours contribute most to solving environmental problems. Second, how to influence these behaviours? You will identify key contextual factors (e.g. technology development, price – input from different disciplines is valuable here!) and psychological factors (e.g. values, identity) that influence environmentally significant behaviour. You will learn to design research and interventions that address these factors in order to promote pro-environmental behaviour. |
