Omschrijving | What is ‘religion’, and what role does it play in contemporary public and political debate? Contrary to popular assumption, ‘religion’ does not mean the same thing for everyone everywhere. Further, multiple implicit assumptions sit behind the term ‘religion’ in contemporary politics, shaping how so-called religious actors and issues are identified and engaged with across law and policy. Beginning with questions of definition and delineation, we will move on to discuss case studies centred on democracy, extremism, human rights and climate change. By examining religion in the public sphere, we will explore such themes as doubt, certainty, and faith; the question of universal versus relative values; the intersection of identity categories; racism and imperialism; and the constraining (and liberating) effects of recognising ‘religion’, particularly in public and foreign policy. |
