Leerdoelen The objective of this course is to initiate an interdisciplinary debate among students on how markets can become more sustainable.
Omschrijving Current consumption patterns are not sustainable – they jeopardize the prosperity and well-being of future generations: fossil fuels are being depleted, fish stocks are decreasing, rain forests are being cut down to make room for agriculture, and climate change threatens prosperity of future generations. Societies are also threatened by over-consumption, with multiple consequences for the individual consumer, such as obesity and addiction. Furthermore, it has been acknowledged that our current (Western) consumption style occurs at the expense of human well-being in non-Western countries and animals. In sum, there is an increasing pledge in society to move to more sustainable consumption behavior, and thus markets.
In this course, we will first discuss the concept of sustainability with the sustainable society index (http://www.ssfindex.com/) as a starting point. We will then identify the main challenges in moving towards a sustainable society, and discuss different aspects of sustainable consumption and sustainable markets, using insights from economics, sociology and psychology. We will on the one hand highlight sustainability from a consumers’ perspective and address topics such as sustainable consumer choices and consumers’ choices in favor or against a more healthy eating pattern. On the other hand, we will also take the perspective of suppliers and producers and discuss the management of complex systems and the transition to sustainable energy markets. We will conclude with an integrated view on “transition management” as a multi disciplinary perspective on how to stimulate a transition towards a sustainable society. In the classes we will have guest lectures from scientists and practitioners from different disciplines.
