Leerdoelen | After having participated in the Societal Challenge Lab students know how to: • conduct a systematic problem and causal analysis about a societal challenge. • develop evidence-based policy recommendations aiming to address this societal challenge. • work in interdisciplinary and international small teams under time pressure. • present and discuss policy recommendations to relevant stakeholders in the field. |

Omschrijving | In the news we read about societal challenges, such as the migration crisis, and obstacles that policy makers and other stakeholders face when trying to solve an issue. The Societal Challenges Lab aims at the combined participation of students, academics, and policy makers to study pressing societal problems at the international, national, or local level from a multidisciplinary perspective in order to collectively develop and assess proposals to address (parts of) these problems by means of policies, projects, or interventions. The Societal Challenge Lab offers students the opportunity to meet relevant stakeholders from outside academy and together with them develop ideas on how to improve the labour market integration of migrants. The ultimate aim of the Lab is to enable students to develop an in-depth problem analysis of this societal challenge, develop concrete policy recommendations to address this challenge, and discuss this with relevant stakeholders in the field. This year’s topic of the Lab will be the challenge of integrating first generation migrants in the Dutch labor market. We will build upon the knowledge gathered in last year’s Lab in which first steps to address this challenge were made. Bachelor students from all disciplines of the Faculty of Behavioral Science can participate in this learning adventure. During the seven weeks students will work in multidisciplinary small group teams and will have the chance to meet relevant guest speakers from academia (RUG and other research institutions) and the applied field (politicians, NGOs, target groups, etc.). At the end, students will present their policy recommendations to an external guest to discuss their recommendations. |

Opmerkingen | Talented and enthusiastic students from the Psychology and Pedagogy bachelor programs who have a clear passion for or interest in the societal challenge lab can apply to participate as part of the free space in their minor. In addition, this course is offered to Sociology students in the honors program. Maximal 20 students will be selected. Interested students are invited to apply for the Lab by submitting a motivation letter and a CV (i.e., explaining their motivation to attend, what they want to learn as well as what they could contribute) by October 1st, 2020 midnight. The application should be uploaded on Nestor. Students will be informed by mid-October whether they have been selected for this course. Selection will predominantly be based on student’s motivation (own learning goals and individual contribution). Interested students from (Re) Master programs can potentially also participate.
