Leerdoelen In this course, students will learn how they can contribute to answering crucial societal questions and create social value/impact by taking an entrepreneurial approach. The course focusses on specific aspects of entrepreneurship in a social context and where it differs from more regular business to business- or consumer markets. Based on cases of social and educational enterprises, students can gain an understanding of factors of success and failure of social enterprises and what it means and needs to start an enterprise/project geared at solving pressing societal issues. As such, the objectives of the course are to 1) encourage a critical exploration of entrepreneurship in a social context as a possible career path for (social science) students; and 2) provide exposure to academic and practitioner perspectives on entrepreneurship in a social context.

By the end of the course, students have an understanding of
1) the context in which entrepreneurs who attribute to social value operate
2) the differences between (on the one hand) entrepreneurship in business to business- and consumermarkets and (on the other hand) entrepreneurship in a social context and
3) factors of success and failure for a social enterprise.

The course thus gives students skills they can apply to entrepreneurship in a social context.
Omschrijving This course provides an introduction to entrepreneurship in a social context by taking a multidisciplinary perspective: educational sciences, psychology and sociology. In the 21st century the job market dynamics, especially for students with a social science background, have become increasingly dynamic. Given the magnitude of these changes and their potential rippling effects, it is essential for social science graduates to be aware of potential career paths, such as entrepreneurship in a social context, where they could apply their unique skillsets as well as work towards solving societally relevant problems. In this course, we will focus on 1) providing an understanding of the broader framework for entrepreneurship in a social context as well as on 2) helping students identify their unique interests, passions and skillsets that could be deployed towards solving socially relevant problems via entrepreneurship. As such, students will be exposed to academic and practitioner perspectives, by means of readings, lectures, videos, case presentations and workshops.
