Leerdoelen After the course, the students:
- Understand some of the most frequently used statistical techniques, including repeated measures models, multivariate models, and Bayesian statistics.
- Determine which statistical model is most appropriate for a given empirical question.
- Apply the new statistical techniques to empirical data sets in R.
- Assess whether the required model assumptions are met for the data at hand.
- Interpret the results derived from applying a statistical model to empirical data.
- Reflect upon different philosophical positions concerning retrieving evidence from data by contrasting frequent and Bayesian approaches for hypothesis testing and estimation.
- Grasp the basic concepts of Bayesian statistics.
Omschrijving This course starts with an introduction to R. Next, a variety of statistical models will be dealt with, covering some multivariate and repeated measures models. Multivariate models (e.g., multivariate t-test, MANOVA, discriminant analysis) allow more than one dependent variable being measured simultaneously. This results in more powerful results as compared to univariate analyses. Repeated measures models (including univariate and multivariate repeated measures ANOVA) allow subjects being measured multiple times on one or more occasions. The course ends with an introduction to Bayesian statistics. Practical labs using R are available, and students will have the opportunity to work in-class on some of the exercises.
