Uitgebreide vaknaam Modelling interactions between persons and variables over time
Leerdoelen After the course, the students can:
- distinguish between different data sources;
- recommend appropriate analytic strategies for specific types of data involving a time component;
- propose requirements to use specific analytic strategies;
- assess the strengths and weaknesses of specific analytic strategies;
- explain the historical background of the major types of statistical instruments;
Omschrijving Research on human development often deals with the analysis of data involving multiple persons, variables and time points. One can think of a 3-D cube, referred to as “Cattell’s data cube”, where several analytical techniques are focused on describing slices of this cube. In this conceptual course, we give an overview of various techniques to analyze two-dimensional data (e.g. multiple variables measured repeatedly over time for one person) and three-dimensional data (i.e. multiple variables measured repeatedly over time for multiple persons), while demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of each of these techniques.
We discuss and compare techniques suitable for describing homogeneous subgroups for one or more slices, as well as techniques focused on describing associations between variables. Examples are: factor analysis, latent class (growth) analysis, 3-mode principal component analysis, multilevel analysis, dynamic network analysis and single-subject time series analysis.
At the end of the course, students will have a conceptual understanding of this range of different techniques and will know when to apply which technique for a given research question in the realm of human development.
The evaluation of this course will be based on an assignment (a research proposal) where students choose a technique suitable for answering their research question (based on their own interests, but involving a time component), after a careful consideration of the possibilities. They will discuss pros and cons of the technique in light of their proposed study.
