Infection & Immunity |
Leerdoelen |
The main objective is to make students intimately familiar with model systems for studies on host-microbe interactions, infection, and immune-mediated disorders in a practical research setting. During the course (I) students will learn how to apply current techniques for infection and immunity research in a practical setting, and how to interpret and evaluate the results and (II) will understand the pro’s and con’s of current techniques for infection and immunity research. |
Omschrijving |
The course entails 3 weeks of practical research in one laboratory of the participating research groups. Prior to the course, students will be provided with a list of 10-15 projects that specify particular topics in infection and immunity research, their scientific context, the techniques to be applied, and the responsible Principal Investigator(s). The students will select projects of their preference, and notify the course coordinators on their first second and third priorities in the week preceding the course (deadline to be specified). Projects will be allocated to students on a first-come-first-serve basis. In the introductory meeting in week 1, students will orally motivate their choice for the particular project they will work on during the elective. After the general plenary introduction, the students will receive a specific introduction to the respective laboratory, and they will then perform a series of experiments under supervision of a PhD student, postdoc or technician. The objective is to have the student do the practical work. At the end of the course, students will orally present the different techniques they applied, and discuss (1) why these techniques were applied, (2) whether they were appropriate, and (3) what are their respective pro’s and con’s. This will be done in a plenary session with all students and supervisors involved. |
