Leerdoelen - Students have knowledge about the research performed within the different research institutes of the UMCG/GRIP, the quality parameters of a researcher (Principle Investigator), including impact-factor, H-factor, ranking of journals in a specific field.
- Students are able to evaluate the quality of a research group and individual researchers, to motivate the top-3 research projects based on the quality analysis, to communicate their choices well (in an oral manner), to interview researchers and to build their professional network.
- Students are familiar with the research code of conduct of the University of Groningen and can apply the rules and guidelines to their own research practice.
- Students have knowledge about the research performed within the track of their choice.
- Students are able to participate in an academic debate within the track of their choice.
Omschrijving The course ‘Fit for practice’ (3 ECTS) consists of two parts. The first part (A) is designed to help students to make an educated choice of subject and supervisor for their first research project. Research projects can be fundamental, translational or clinical in nature; selection of which is dependent on the research interest of the student. Students must interview at least three PIs whose research matches their research interests. They also have to discuss the PIs research, research group, funding and (inter)national network and the students’ opportunities for own input. Based on the interview and additional information (publications, research history but also for example personal preferences, background education and future ambitions of the student) the students have to judge which supervisor/project meets the criteria for their personal development and ambition best. Students will discuss their options with the teachers, mentor and they can also contact the track coordinators for guidance in their decision. In the end, the students present their top 3 in which they need to thoroughly explain the reasoning behind the ranking based on the above considerations. When the choice of the student complies with the learning outcomes as defined for the first research project, the internship will be approved by the examiners.

The second part (B) of this course, entails track-specific activities and workshops regarding scientific integrity. Before part B starts, students will attend a masterclass for each track to get further acquainted with the tracks. Importantly it will also give the students the opportunity to discuss with worldwide experts within the respective fields. Thereafter, students will choose their track activity group of interest. During research project I, five meetings (each 2 hours) (such as journal clubs and expert meetings) are scheduled to obtain advanced knowledge within this field of research. These meetings are organized by the track coordinator.
Next to this, students will follow workshops in scientific integrity. The aim of the course is to introduce the students to problems and tools of research ethics. Topics covered in the research ethics course address all phases of scientific research from research problem selection, methodology, working with research subjects to issues of international collaboration, commercialization and authorship. The workshops are designed as an interactive course thereby training students to recognize ethical issues in their daily work and to discuss how to deal with these. This means that institutional and other tools will be discussed such as the role and functions of Institutional Review Boards, laws and regulations, the RUG/UMCG protocol and risk-benefit assessments.
