Leerdoelen In the course units Causes of Diseases the final attainment levels are achieved with respect to knowledge development. Through these course units, the student becomes aware of the significance of basic subjects for the medical content. During the three years the student builds up knowledge of the basic subjects as well as clinical subjects. By explicitly programming the knowledge into the Causes of Diseases course units, it is recognizable to students. Each week, one health complaint is central to the Causes of Diseases course unit.
Complaints are clustered into themes, which take an average of four weeks to prevent fragmentation and provide structure for students. Teachers and examiners decide on the line of design of the themes and semesters, thus avoiding gaps in knowledge development. The themes are leading for the content of the curriculum and are chosen in such a way that there is a logical connection with the curriculum of the basic subjects.
Students are expected to study all aspects of the health complaint: from the molecular background, etiology, pathogenesis, symptomatology and therapy to the financial, ethical and public health aspects. In this way, the basic subjects are well integrated with the clinical content and are tested accordingly. It is also expected that students will be able to make the link with Healthy Ageing when they have a complaint.

Opmerkingen Knowledge from the course units Causes of Disease is tested with written exams. Written exams consist largely of vignettes in which an outline of the clinical picture of disease is given. Linked to these are questions, in which the basic subjects play an important part.
