Leerdoelen | 1. independently analyze the spatial conditions (morphological, social, legal, etc.) by recognizing specificities, challenges and opportunities of a given area of analysis. 2. independently compose and promote a multi-sectorial approach that do not propose perfect formulas, but interpret the possibilities of action. Possible approaches include the plural dimensions of complex cities (i.e., physical, social, environmental dimensions). 3. demonstrate team-work and professional skills within challenging settings (see the grading criteria). 4. individually and in groups find, use and illustrate relevant information and resources from different fields of study (i.e. architecture, sociology, transport planning, urban design and project management) useful to sustain their own analysis, suggestions, guidelines and choices. 5. examine and evaluate with specialist language the strengths and opportunities of different choices throughout a design process (in general and in their own), while recognizing the relation between intentional design and emergence in complex cities. 6. describe the role of different urban actors for the development of design guidelines that steer towards desirable outcomes, as well as for the implementation of the overall planning process. 7. individually and in groups successfully communicate their own ideas through discussions and presentations, but also through the use of visuals, schemes, conceptual and technical maps that can be understood by everyone without the support of any spoken explanation. |

Omschrijving | The urban form is subject to both intentional control of space and emerging patterns. Planners create a certain degree of spatial order otherwise unreachable without plans. Designing transformations is an interplay between different disciplines, domains and knowledge, between visions and constraining conditions. Large margins of uncertainty characterise every design process. There are no perfect formulas to design cities, no project can be considered a final product or solution. Design is a process in which actors and their actions reconfigure in relation to temporary conditions. In this perspective planners can intervene in two ways: directly, for instance by creating certain physical objects and urban elements like housing, public spaces, collective services and infrastructures; or indirectly, through rules or incentives that influence the actions of private urban actors. Planners’ skills must cover both types of intervention. In order to translate visions into feasible actions able to cope with the context, as future spatial planners, students will learn to deal with the main conditions (technical and procedural) that influence the development of cities at the local level (e.g. social, cultural, legal, etc.). Therefore, the scopes of this course are the following: (1) to explore the role that urban design plays in shaping the development of complex urban environments; (2) to understand the complexity and variety of conditions which influence urban transformations. |
