1 Theoretical attitudes and understanding, research skills
Graduates have:
1A. Sound knowledge and thorough understanding of important contemporary interdisciplinary issues and theories in spatial sciences, and a detailed knowledge of important issues in the area of interest, including relevant theories and subjects in disciplines related to the Faculty’s Research Programme, towards Wellbeing, Innovation and Spatial Transformation (tWIST).
1B. Sound knowledge and understanding of theoretical models, concepts and frameworks that help explain and interpret spatial, societal and institutional phenomena and dynamics.
1E. The ability to position one’s own research questions in the relevant philosophical and theoretical debates in the field of regional studies.
1F. A helicopter view of suitable and feasible research designs and methods of data collection in different types of research, such as field, survey and/or experimental research, as well as expertise and experience in the adequacy, applicability and factual application of such research designs and methods of data collection.

2 General academic skills
Graduates have:
2B. The ability to present work to specialist and non-specialist audiences and to communicate the underpinnings as well as the limitations of the conclusions.
2C. The ability to develop new, creative and well-argued perspectives on existing theoretical, methodological and societal debates in the field of geography, planning and/or demography.
2D. The ability to write scientifically.
2H. The ability to position research designs and research findings in their wider societal context by showing awareness of different ways in which the issues under study are perceived, valued and contested.
Omschrijving The course Scientific Reading, Debating and Reflecting has as its purpose to fuel scientific curiosity and to create a stimulating atmosphere of academic freedom with room for everyday scientific observations as well as deep-digging questions. The course has three main elements. In the course students read, discuss, write and present about famous scientifically inspiring books, documentaries, and articles; also relating to the philosophy of science (1a, 1b, 1e, 1f, 2b); for every book, documentary of article they write a brief reflection. Furthermore, all students keep a personal scientific diary in which they track and develop their own scientific expertise, discoveries, problems, observations, and thoughts; making a diary post every week (1e, 2c). The ReMa course thus organizes doing (small scale) research from day one. Finally, in the course students discuss and reflect upon the extra assignments they perform in non-ReMa courses.

In semester 1a-1b of the first year of the ReMa students have two-weekly meetings with the first-year students. Over both years of the ReMa (1a-2b) students have monthly meetings in which both first and second year students are together. Here also, inspiring books are discussed, students keep and share thoughts from their scientific diaries, and the extra assignments in other courses are discussed (1e, 1f, 2b).

The work in the SRDR course is graded per year with a pass or fail. At the end of year 1 students file their reflections on the books, their diary, their extra theory and their extra methods assignments. This 4-fold portfolio is the basis of the assessment, in conjunction with the active participation during meetings. At the end of year 2 students file the complete (for two years) reflections. This, now extended, 4-fold portfolio is the basis of the assessment, in conjunction with the active participation during meetings.

The classes take the form of group discussions, debates, and presentations directed by experienced researchers. They are designed to familiarize students with a range of analytical and expositional approaches in spatial sciences and help them find their own position and sharpen their own ideas in the field of spatial sciences (2h).
