1 c) The ability to translate knowledge of contemporary interdisciplinary issues and theoretical models, concepts and frameworks into the development of appropriate research questions and research designs.
1 f) A helicopter view of suitable and feasible research designs and methods of data collection in different types of research, such as field, survey and/or experimental research, as well as expertise and experience in the adequacy, applicability and factual application of such research designs and methods of data collection.
1 g) The ability to choose and apply an appropriate research methodology, methods and techniques, and to critically evaluate the resulting research outcomes.
1 h) Expertise and experience in the integration of theory and qualitative and quantitative empirical research (‘theory-guided empirical research’); data-guided and theory-guided theory building; experience in the entire process of research, including reporting on the research results.

2 General academic skills
2 a) The ability to reflect on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of knowledge and judgements.
2 c) The ability to develop new, creative and well-argued perspectives on existing theoretical, methodological and societal debates in the field of spatial sciences: geography, planning and/or demography.d) The ability to write scientifically.
2 e) The ability to search for and retrieve information and to document and archive data according to general academic standards.
2 h) The ability to position research designs and research findings in their wider societal context by showing awareness of different ways in which the issues under study are perceived, valued and contested.

3 General work orientation
3 a) The analytical and research skills required for a PhD programme after graduation, or to function at a professional level in research and policy departments of governmental/non-governmental organizations and enterprises.
Omschrijving The course runs on two tracks. The first track trains a multitude of high-level cutting-edge research methods, research software and data use, in a practical way. This part of the course will to a large extent be given by different PhD students, basically one PhD for every week. Every week then a PhD student gives a start and end workshop introducing in a hands-on way an interesting research method, a piece of software, a nice dataset etc. Students explore the methods in a practical way. In a final workshop they have to present a review of the merits of one of the learned methods and the PhD students react on their views. An important side benefit of this part of the course is that it links ReMa students to PhD students within the graduate school.
In the second track of the course, the students write a paper which can be seen as a synthesis of all their (20 ECTS) methods courses. They take an issue they are interested in researching. In the paper, they write down three different methods to research the issue and suggest possible (type of) outcomes. Finally, they reflect on the merits and downsides of the different methods and the benefits of combining methods.
