Leerdoelen The Master’s thesis is the conclusion of the Master’s Programme and as such it uses and tests many of the skills and competences the students have developed in their studies. As a result, it also relates to a large number of Learning outcomes as formulated for the programme as a whole. In the Master’s thesis, however, we emphasize the following learning outcomes:

Students learn to …
1) independently formulate an academically and/or societally relevant problem definition making use of their understanding and knowledge of the academic field of economic geography and relevant societal developments.
2) make a substantive argument, using academic sources, for their theoretical and empirical approach to a research problem.
3) to draw practical (policy) implications from their research.
4) to critically reflect on reasoning, arguments and points of view of others as well as on their own work.
5) Graduates are able to independently perform academic research, whether or not in an interdisciplinary context.
6) Graduates are able to clearly present the motivation, approach and results of academic research in an academic context as well as in a professional context, for example in discussions regarding business strategies, and regional development policies.
Omschrijving The individual Master’s thesis concludes the Master programmes in Economic Geography and Economic Geography: Regional Competitiveness and Trade. It entails an individual research project developed and executed by the student under the guidance of one of the researchers at the faculty.

Students are free to choose a topic, provided it is relevant to the field of economic geography. Preferably, topics relate to the research agenda of the faculty (tWIST) and Economic Geography in particular. This means that topics in the broad fields of regional labour markets and firm dynamics, including entrepreneurship, are highly encouraged.

The course is a combination of a fixed set of group meetings and individual progress meetings with your supervisor. The course can be started in 1b and 2b.

Please refer to the Nestor-page for exact dates and additional information, for example regarding possible research topics.
