Leerdoelen After completing the course, students are able to
1. Understand the basic methodologies and assumptions behind population projections
2. Compute own population projections based on the methods and assumptions learnt
3. Apply the computed population projections computed by independently researching and critically reflecting on the crosscutting issues of population and environmental change, food security, sustainable development and wellbeing at the sub-national or local level, and the relevance and implications for a specific country.
Omschrijving Amidst global population growth, there are concerns about the impact of human activities in aggravating climate and environmental change and natural resource depletion. These concerns are informed by projections of future population growth. The accuracy of such projections matters as policy and practice are built on them.
This course focuses on the issues of population growth and projections, climate change, and the implications for environmental sustainability and food security. The crux of the course will be on a critical assessment of the methodology and the assumptions behind the main global population projections. Key to population projections is the cohort component method which involves (a) the formulation of assumptions for each of the components, i.e. fertility, mortality and migration, and (b) the implementation of these assumptions using the Leslie model which implies a matrix formulation. The outcomes will be evaluated in relation to population wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
The course will consist of lectures, practical computer lab sessions and guest lectures from a wide array of experts working on population-related issues. Students will critically reflect upon a selection of scientific papers or policy reports on climate change, environmental sustainability and food security that are built on population projections. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have an understanding of the underlying assumptions and knowledge on how to make population projections, and the implications for population wellbeing and sustainable development.
