Leerdoelen | This course is aiming to reach a set of goals in support of the student to make progress. Each of these goals represents a particular level of understanding. The following levels are being distinguished: 0: the student has never before encountered this kind of knowledge 1: the student knows about the issue, but lacks the details and the contextual argumentation 2: the student has the capability to operationalize the issue to a limited extend 3: the student is able to operationalize the issue given a particular context (final level of the programme) Planning theory is about a disciplinary debate on the rationale behind spatial interventions. This debate is on-going already for some time, which allows us to look back in retrospect about arguments presented in the past. The planning theoretical debate is rather dynamic, which means arguments been made in the past have evolved fast and have taken various routes. The course Planning theory is using this retrospect to understand the contemporary situation planning theory is in today. And from the contemporary situation planning theory is in today – some call it it’s third crisis – we are going to explore a particular and promising route the theoretical debate might take towards the future: spatial planning seen from a complexity science perspective, embracing the non-linear. After successfully participating in the course Planning theory the student’s abilities are: With regard to abstractions: 1. Understanding what ‘theory’ means 2. Differentiating and connecting various theories, concepts and ideas relevant to planning 3. To frame theories within their essential philosophical contexts 4. Having an understanding of so-called general theories (systems thinking, complexity thinking) and their relevance to spatial planning With regard to rationality, decision-making and choice: 5. To explain the relevance of rationality to spatial planning 6. To having a contingent understanding of rationality 7. To understand the academic debate on certainty and uncertainty 8. Relating planning approached to various rationality perspectives 9. To make use of a decision-making model regarding planning issues, their actions and likely consequences With regard to planning practice: 10. Being able to relate an empirical situation, a planning issue, a planning action and its likely consequences at a meta level 11. To construct a basic institutional design in support of a planning action 12. Being able to position various examples of situations and planning issues within a relevant theoretical context 13. Rethinking planning practice from a non-linear perspective – towards adaptive planning |

Omschrijving | The aim of the planning theory course is to gain more in-depth knowledge of the theoretical background of planning in such a way that the student can identify suitable existing planning and decision-making models for issues at hand. The student will also be able to picture a planning issue within a theoretical frame, through which an approach and its consequences can be deduced. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
