Leerdoelen The course goal is to train students in the use of theory to understand how organizations function and interact with the external environment in order to develop knowledge about the processes through which managers select and manage aspects of structure, culture, and strategy that can be subsequently applied to real-life situations to increase organizational effectiveness.
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
1. Understand and explain the design and functioning of organizations.
2. Use key theories and concepts on organizational design, organizational environment, organizational dynamics, power, culture, problem-solving, decision-making, and technology.
3. Explain the significance of these theories and concepts for business practitioners.
4. Analyze relationships between design variables and predict effects of changes in such variables.
5. Develop ideas about effective organizational designs.
6. Understand the basic nature and meaning of theory in business research and practice and critique such theory based on its assumptions and boundary conditions.
Omschrijving This course takes a broad view of the diverse design concepts, models and theories relevant to explain the effectiveness of organizations. This broad view is described in terms of contingency theory: there are several variables that affect the effectiveness of the organizational structure. So, in framing their decisions on strategies, structures and processes, managers should take these variables into consideration. Key variables studied in this course include: the environment, interorganizational relations, internationalization, developments in IT, growth and ageing of organizations, culture, and technology. In addition, the basics of dynamics and change in organizations, related to innovation, power, conflict, decision-making, and culture will be discussed. The course relies on a combination of well-established, classic organizational theories as well as select modern theories and approaches. The teaching method consists of self-study, supported by lectures in which instructors will present key topics and example cases.

Opmerkingen This course is part of several Pre-Master programs, designed for foreign students and HBO students who wish to follow a Master program at FEB. Because the course is designed as a basic introduction to organization theory and design, no specific prior knowledge of this domain is required. However, basic knowledge of core management disciplines such as business strategy or organizational structure and development is beneficial. Students of this class need to be equipped with the necessary analytical and language skills to: (1) recognize and diagnose problems of organizations, (2) read and process high-quality academic literature, and (3) write and communicate in a structured and systematic manner.
