Omschrijving This course takes a broad view of the diverse design concepts, models and theories relevant to explain the effectiveness of organizations. This broad view is described in terms of contingency theory: there are several variables that affect the effectiveness of the organizational structure. So, in framing their decisions on strategies, structures and processes, managers should take these variables into consideration. Key variables studied in this course include: the environment, interorganizational relations, internationalization, developments in IT, growth and ageing of organizations and culture. In addition, the basics of dynamics and change in organizations, related to innovation, power, conflict, decision-making and culture will be discussed. Classic as well as modern theories and approaches will be dealt with, as well as the use of the system approach in designing organizational structures. The teaching method consists of self-study, supported by lectures in which instructors will present key topics and example cases.
